Antioxidant profile of constituents isolated from Polygonatumverticillatum rhizomes

Abstract: The purpose of the current study was to estimate the antioxidant profile of two compounds, diosgenin and santonin, isolated from Polygonatum verticillatum rhizomes. Stable free radical, 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and reducing power assays were employed for this purpose. The results showed profound free radical scavenging effect of both diosgenin and santonin in a concentration-dependent manner. The calculated half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values for both diosgenin and santonin was 65.80 and … Show more

“…The fruits of C. sinensis and C. anrantifolia showed the presence of phenols, flavonoids, reducing sugars, steroids, terpinedes, and tannins, while the fruits of C. limonum indicated the presence of phenols, flavonoids, reducing sugars, terpinedes, and tannins. Different reactive oxidative species (ROS) including superoxide radicals and hydroxyl (OH) radicals are natural products produced in living organisms [ 7 ]. Reactive oxidative species produced as by product play a key role in cell signaling.…”

“…Different reactive oxidative species are natural products and are mostly produced by living organisms. [16] These free radicals can damage essential proteins, DNA, lipids, and shows harmful effects in cell structure and cause different kind of diseases/ disorders, i.e., cancer, stroke, and diabetes. Antioxidants play an important role against free radicals and provide a defense mechanism of living cells against oxidative damage.…”

“…The plant is considered as rasayana and a vital ingredient of ayurvedic products because of its health promoting potentials via cell regeneration properties . Earlier reports described only a few molecules including β ‐sitosterol, lectins, diosgenin, 5‐hydroxymethyl‐2‐furaldehyde, santonin, 2‐hydroxybenzoic acid, homoisoflavonoids and polysaccharides from P. verticillatum . However, P. verticillatum has abundant demand in the global market but knowledge of the chemistry and a lack of reliable analytical methods can lead to the use of substitution and adulteration .…”
