The aim of this research was to study the effect of abscisic acid pre-harvest treatment on the phenolic composition of olive fruits. To that end we applied abscisic acid (i.e., 50 mg/L and 100 mg/L) on Arbequina and Picual olive trees. Two different days of harvesting (i.e., day 3 and 6 after treatment) were also included in the study. Although the results obtained depended on the cultivar and on the day of harvesting a general trend was established. The treatment with 50 mg/L of abscisic acid resulted in higher total phenol content but significant decrease in the DPPH activity. In contrast, olives treated with 100 mg/L abscisic acid resulted in higher total phenol content, DPPH activity and contents of oleuropein, hydroxytyrosol and phenolic acids as compared with controls. The best values of total phenol content and IC 50 were obtained for treated Picual olives (727.75 mg gallic kg -1 and 889.72 µg/ml, respectively) whereas the highest values of oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol were measured for treated Arbequina olives (508.94 and 559.67 mg kg -1 , respectively). Phenolic acid content was also higher in Picual olives treated with 100 mg/L of abscisic acid. Particulary, values ranged from 7.26 mg kg -1 for caffeic acid to 92.38 mg kg -1 for chlorogenic acid. Exogenous abscisic acid applied to olive trees is a promising agronomic practice to obtain olives enriched in antioxidants.

Beta-amyloid (Aβ) is considered as one of the major causes of Alzheimer's disease. This study examined the neuroprotective effects of chlorogenic acid, a naturally occurring polyphenol which is distributed widely in plants, fruits and vegetables, against Aβ-induced toxicity. Aβ decreased signifi cantly the viability of PC12 cells. This was accompanied by an increase in the intracellular calcium levels and cleaved caspase-3. In addition, Aβ induced an increase in Bax, and a decrease in Bcl-2 compared to the controls. However, a pre-treatment with chlorogenic acid rescued the PC12 cells from Aβ by attenuating the elevated intracellular calcium levels and reducing the levels of the apoptosis related proteins, including caspase-3, Bcl-2 and Bax. These results suggest that the protective effects of chlorogenic acid are, at least in parts, by attenuating the intracellular calcium infl ux and reducing apoptosis induced by Aβ. Abstractthat is distributed widely in plants, fruits and vegetables, such as coffee beans, potatoes and apples (Clifford, 1999;Zang et al., 2003). It possesses a wide range of biological activities including anti-carcinogenic, anti-bacterial, anti-infl ammatory and antioxidant activities in vitro (Huang et al., 1988;Almeida et al., 2006;dos Santos et al., 2006). However, the possible benefi cial effects of chlorogenic acid against Aβ have not been elucidated. Therefore, this study evaluated the neuroprotective effects of chlorogenic acid against Aβ-induced toxicity in PC12 cells (rat pheochromocytoma). To accomplish this, an MTT (3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay was carried out to determine if chlorogenic acid protected the PC12 cells against Aβ. To examine their underlying mechanisms, the effects of chlorogenic acid on the intracellular calcium level and apoptosis related proteins including Bcl-2, Bax and caspase-3 were evaluated as possible neuroprotective mechanisms against Aβ.

The effect of the postharvest treatment of methyl jasmonate enantiomers in conjunction with ethanol on bioformation of resveratrol and quercetin glycosides in grapes was evaluated. The antioxidant activity of treated grape extracts as compared with untreated extracts was also assayed. Exogenous (-)-methyl jasmonate in combination with ethanol induced a significant increase in the levels of resveratrol (from 27 to 39 μg g(-1)), quercetin-3-O-glucoside (from 59 to 136 μg g(-1)), quercetin-3-O-galactoside (from 398 to 807 μg g(-1)) and quercetin-3-O-rutinoside (from 23 to 43 μg g(-1)). (+)-Methyl jasmonate with ethanol also resulted in increase of quercetin-3-O-glucoside and quercetin-3-O-rutinoside. However, no (+)-methyl jasmonate effect was observed for resveratrol and quercetin-3-O-galactoside. Both (-)- and (+)-methyl jasmonate treatments provided with extracts with higher antioxidant activity. From the results found in the present work postharvest treatment with (-)-methyl jasmonate in conjunction with ethanol is proposed as a mean to obtain polyphenol-enriched grape extracts with improved antioxidant properties. The procedure here developed is proposed as a mean to obtain functional grapes. Extracts obtained from grapes treated with (-)-methyl jasmonate with ethanol can be particularly useful for industry due to their high antioxidant capacity.
