Antioxidant status in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats treated with vanadium complex

Abstract: As lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress play a key role in the pathogenesis of diabetes, the antioxidant status of streptozotocin induced diabetic rats, treated with vanadium complex was explored in the present study. Diabetes was induced by single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (STZ) at the dose rate of 45 mg per kg body weight. Diabetes was confirmed after 72 hours of STZ injection by estimating blood glucose level and those rats showing more than 250 mg/ dL were considered as diabetic. Vanad… Show more

“…On day 31, all rats fasted for 24h. On day 32, rats were weighed and 5‰ Streptozotocin (STZ) was injected intraperitoneally (45mg/kg body weight) in the model group and citrate buffer was injected intraperitoneally (4.5ml/kg body weight) in the healthy group (Kannan, et al, 2016). Injection was completed within 30 minutes .…”

“…Control rats received citrate buffer instead of STZ. Up to 24h after injection the animals were allowed access to 5% glucose solution instead of drinking water, to prevent hypoglycemia due to massive pancreatic insulin release caused by STZ (Kannan et al, 2016). After 72h of injection, blood glucose level was assessed by using MYLIFE PURA glucometer strips.…”

“…Groups III and IV were diabetic rats treated at the dose rate of 5 mg/kg body weight with V 2 O 5 and V 2 O 5 NP respectively. Group V was diabetic rats treated with standard hypoglycemic drug glimepiride at the dose rate of 800 μg/ kg body weight for comparison (Kannan et al, 2016).…”

“…Diabetes mellitus is a syndrome characterized by chronic hyperglycemia and disturbances of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism associated with absolute or relative deficiency in insulin secretion and action (Kannan et al, 2016). This is a world wide health problem affecting millions in both developed and developing countries and today it is recognized as an epidemic disease in most countries (Budhwar et al, 2010).…”
