Antioxidants of therapeutic relevance in COPD from the neotropical blueberry Anthopterus wardii

Abstract: Four flavone C-glycosides, isoorientin (1), orientin (2), vitexin (3), and isovitexin (4), were isolated from the neotropical blueberry of Anthopterus wardii, a so-called “superfruit”, using antioxidant activity-guided fractionation. A dose-response relationship of compounds 1–4 was determined for their anti-inflammatory activity against interleukin-8 (IL-8) and for the inhibition of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) expression, an inflammatory marker for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The four flavon… Show more

“…In comparison to reported MMP-1 inhibitory activities of antioxidant phenolics such as vitexin and isoorientin in the same COPD model, ellagic reduced MMP-1 expression at a far lower concentration. 19 The two flavone C-glyco-sides have already been identified as potential drug candidates for COPD. 19 …”

“…33 This is associated with inhibition of TNF-a-induced inammatory responses, 34 and potential stimulation of anti-inammatory activity against interleukin-8 (IL-8) for inhibited of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) expression. 35 The anthocyanins of blueberries have been shown to reduce the activation of NF-kB, induced by IL-1b in intestinal epithelial Caco-2 cells. 36 These results support that blueberry bioactive compounds have potential bioactivities to act as dietary anti-inammatory agents.…”
