Antiproliferative Activity of Paeoniflorin Is Through Cell Cycle Arrest and the Fas/Fas Ligand‐mediated Apoptotic Pathway in Human Non‐small Cell Lung Cancer A549 Cells

Abstract: 1. Paeoniflorin (PF), isolated from the paeony root, is reported to have immunoregulatory, neuromuscular blocking, anticonvulsant, antihyperglycaemic and antihypotensive effects. 2. The present study investigated the antiproliferative activity of PF. The results showed that PF inhibited the proliferation of A549 by blocking cell cycle progression in the G(0)/G(1) phase and inducing apoptosis. 3. An ELISA showed that G(0)/G(1) phase arrest may be due to p53-independent induction of p21/wild-type p53-activated f… Show more

“…Some chemical constituents in SGLXD, including glycosides, naphthoquinones and saponins, were reported to demonstrate the anti-proliferation to various carcinoma cell lines (Singh et al, 2003;Wu, 2003;Hung et al, 2008;). The naphthoquinones from Radix Lithospermi, such as shikonin and alkanin, have been reported to inhibit the proliferation of breast carcinomas cells MCF-7, MDA-MB-231 and SK-BR-3 (Hou et al, 2006;Wang et al, 2009;.…”

“…It has numerous pharmacological effects including anti-inflammatory, anti-allergy, hepatoprotective and neuromuscular blocking, among others (13)(14)(15)(16)(17). Our previous investigation revealed that paeoniflorin inhibits NF-κB activation and enhances 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-induced apoptosis in the human gastric carcinoma cell line, SGC790 (18).…”

“…SGLXD is consisted of six herbs and their chemical constituents are multiplex. In SGLXD, some chemical constituents, including naphthoquinones, glycosides and saponins, were reported to inhibit the proliferation of various carcinoma cell lines (Hung et al, 2008;Singh et al, 2003;Wu, 2003;). The naphthoquinones from Lithospermum erythrorhizon Sieb.et Zucc., such as shikonin and alkanin, have been reported to inhibit the proliferation of breast cancer cells MCF-7 and SK-BR-3 (Wang et al, 2009;Zhang et al, 2009).…”

“…lactiflora Pall., such as paeoniflorin, have been reported to inhibit the proliferation of lung cancer cells A549 (Hung et al, 2008). The saponins from Bupleurum chinense DC., such as saikosaponin A, B 2 , have demonstrated a potent anticancer effect.…”
