Antiproliferative, Cytotoxic, Antioxidant Activity and Polyphenols Contents in Leaves of Four Staphylea L. Species

Abstract: Staphylea has been used for long time in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and by Native Americans in a number of therapeutical indications. The present study describes in vitro antiproliferative, cytotoxic properties (MTT and LDH test) and antioxidant activities (reduction of DPPH radical and peroxynitrite radical) of Staphylea colchica Stev. (SC), S. elegans Zab. (SC), S. holocarpa Hemsl. (SH) and S. pinnata L. (SP) leave water extracts. Time- (24 and 72 h) and dose- (1-150 μg/mL) dependent effects of the a… Show more

“…Experimental and epidemiological studies show a clear correlation between a high intake of fruit and vegetables and beneficial health effects (Wu et al , ; Mezzadri et al , ; Watson and Preedy, ). The antioxidant activity of phenolic constituents is believed to be responsible for these properties, by acting as potent free radical scavengers, efficient antioxidants and antiproliferative agents (Yañez et al , ; Lacikova et al , ). As fruit juice intake is promoted as a way for consumers to satisfy the recommendation to eat more fruit and vegetables, it should be noted that industrial food processing could affect the polyphenol content (Manach et al , ) and thus, probably, have an impact on its health properties.…”

“…Necrosis increases the permeability of cytoplasmic membrane, resulting in release of cytoplasmic LDH and other cytotoxic substances into the medium [19]. The measurement of LDH release is useful in assessing the cytotoxicity of cells [20].…”

“…There is much interest in the biological effects of flavonoids because they exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antimutagenic, antiviral and antiallergical, antibacterial (bactericidal, bacteriostatic), algicidal, antifungal, insecticidal, estrogenic, and keratolytic activities (Pietta 2000;Lacikova et al 2009;Khadem and Marles 2010;Chong et al 2010;Yang et al 2001). Moreover, flavonoids may play an important role in atherosclerosis prevention and therapy (see other important effects).…”
