Antiretroviral treatment response of HIV‐infected children after prevention of mother‐to‐child transmission in West Africa

Abstract: IntroductionWe assessed the rate of treatment failure of HIV-infected children after 12 months on antiretroviral treatment (ART) in the Paediatric IeDEA West African Collaboration according to their perinatal exposure to antiretroviral drugs for preventing mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT).MethodsA retrospective cohort study in children younger than five years at ART initiation between 2004 and 2009 was nested within the pWADA cohort, in Bamako-Mali and Abidjan-Côte d’Ivoire. Data on PMTCT exposure were col… Show more

“…18 About 66.7% anemia occurred in HEI infants in this study. Anemia could be correlated with several factors as described in several previous studies such as advanced clinical and immunological HIV disease stage 19,20 , breastfeeding period 21 , highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), and cotrimoxazole. 7 Further research is needed to determine the cause of anemia in this group.…”

“…In most studies, the virologic response is assessed during the rst two years following ART initiation of HIV-infected infants (7)(8)(9)(10)12,(21)(22)(23)(24)(25)(26)(27)(28). However, early initiation of ART in vertically HIV-infected children exposes them to a very long-lasting treatment relative to that of adults.…”
