Antitumor action of shiitake(Lentinus edodes) fruit bodies orally administered to mice.

Abstract: The powdered fruit bodies of shiitake (Lentinus edodes) showed antitumor activity when given orally to mice. The growth of tumors, both syngeneic and allogeneic, was inhibited by 57.9 to 78.6% in shiitake-fed mice. The degree of inhibition was proportional to the consumption of the experimental diet (L-feed) and was evident even when the administration was started from the 7th day after tumor implantation. The inhibition of tumor growth was mainly due to a glucan contained in the fruit bodies, but the lipid fr… Show more

“…14 Since some of the actions exerted by this isolated polysaccharide have also been found in experiments using L. edodes fruiting bodies, 15,16 we suppose that the aqueous extract used in this study could have acted in a manner similar to that of lentinan, increasing blood stream monocytes and possibly granulocyte progenitors (CFU-GMs). In fact, although we do not know the chemical composition of L. edodes aqueous extract, it had been demonstrated that aqueous extracts of several mushrooms contain a high concentration of polysaccharides, which could be responsible for the bioactive effects.…”

“…␤-1,3-glucan, there were also earlier reports that some mushroom ␤-1,3;1,6-glucans could mediate tumor regression when given orally (18,19). In more recent studies using human tumor xenografts, orally administered soluble barley ␤-1,3;1,4-glucan or i.v.…”

“…It has been described as T-cell-oriented adjuvant in vivo [2], but is also potentiates NK cell activity [20,13,6] and several macrophage/monocyte functions (e. g. antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity, interleukin-1 and superoxide anion production, spreading, phagocytosis, and cytotoxicity) [1,5,7,8,13,14, 20]. In previous studies lentinan inhibited the lung colony for--marion of Lewis lung tumor [11,12], while it was ineffective against the highly metastatic LLT-HH line [1 t ].…”
