Antitumor effect of the seashell protein Haishengsu on Ehrlich ascites tumor: an experimental study

Abstract: The aim of the study was to investigate the in vivo effect of the seashell protein Haishengsu (HSS) on Ehrlich ascites tumor. Mice were inoculated with Ehrlich ascites tumor cells and randomly divided into three HSS groups and a control group. The survival times in the three HSS-treated groups was longer than in the control (P < 0.01) and the increased life span in the high-dose HSS group was greater than in the lower-dose groups (P < 0.05). In comparison with control group, the mice receiving pretreatment of … Show more

“…In this study, we determined %ILS after CCS treatment and showed dose-dependent improvements in survival time (C1: 19.23%; C2: 23.08% and C3: 34.61%). The same was reported in a study of the protein Haishengsu from Tegillarca granosa L. This study showed an increase in %ILS in animals inoculated with EAC cells, indicating inhibition of tumor growth (Liu et al, 2009). …”

“…The mechanisms by which HSS improves the chemosensitivities of acute leukemia are not entirely clear. Previous in vitro works have shown that HSS reduces the expression of multi-drug resistance associated genes, MDR-1, BCR-ABL, and sorcin [2,[4][5][6][7][8]10,11]. P-gp is a membrane transport protein located in the cell membrane encoded by MDR-1 genes.…”

“…The natural products may have an adjuvant effect when added to conventional chemotherapy in patients with cancers [1,2]. Haishengsu (HSS) is a purified protein from Tegillarca granosa L. (Order Arcoida) which is a sea creature that contains a high concentration of proteins and vitamin B 12 [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11]. When used as an adjuvant therapy, HSS was reported to improve clinical outcomes of patients undergoing conventional chemotherapy for lung or renal cancer [2,8].…”

“…The extracts of T. L. granosa are components of Chinese medicine formula used to treat many cancers and inflammatory conditions for some centuries. [1][2][3] Recently, the biological activities of several proteins purified from T. L. granosa have been evaluated in vitro and in vivo. 4,5 We isolated a novel seashell protein with a molecular weight of approximately 15 kDa (15-23 kDa) from T. L. granosa and named it Haishengsu (HSS).…”

“…L. granosa is a type of Malaysian shellfish. For centuries, the extracts of T. L. granosa have been included in Chinese medicinal formulas that have been used to treat many cancers and inflammatory diseases [1][2][3]. Recently, several proteins have been purified from T. L. granosa and their biological activities have been evaluated 19,20.…”
