“…We thus evaluated the action of EOHM on oxidative stress caused by ethanol-induced gastric damage in rats, to show possible antioxidant activity. Ethanol destroys cells by causing mucosal disturbances in the microcirculation of free radicals in the mucosa, increased lipid peroxidation, a decrease of non-protein sulfhydryl groups (GSH) and mucus production and inhibition of gastric prostaglandins [30]. Furthermore, ethanol also destroys epithelial cells in the stomach, causing infiltration of inflammatory cells such as neutrophils and macrophages, which eventually produce vasoconstriction, submucosal edema and hemorrhagic lesions [31].…”
