Antiulcerogenic activity of Solenostemon monostachyus

Abstract: Objective: Solenostemon monostachyus P. Beauv (family Lamiaceae) used traditionally by the Ibibios of Southern Nigeria to treat stomach ulcer, malaria and other inflammatory diseases was evaluated for antiulcer activity. Materials and Methods: The effects of extract of Solenostemon monostachyus (75 - 225 mg/kg) and fractions (Aqueous and chloroform, 150 mg/kg) on experimentally induced ulcer were studied in rats using ethanol, indomethacin, reserpine and histamine –induced ulcer models. Results: The effect of … Show more

“…The gastroprotective effect exhibited by H. annuus may be attributed to the presence of flavonoids and polypheolic compounds, saponins and tannins. 33,34 These compounds most likely inhibit gastric mucosal injury by scavenging the stress-generated oxygen metabolites. 35 Flavonoids have been reported possess protective effects on gastric mucosa and a variety of ulcerogenic agents in different mammalian species.…”

“…The essential oil obtained from Solenostemon monostachyus leaf contains βpinene, oct-1-en-3-ol, β-caryophyllene, octan-3ol and (E,E)-α-farnesene [15]. Reported biological activities of the plant include antioxidant and antihypertensive, antimicrobial activities and antiulcer [17]. Peperomia pellucida (L.), known commonly as silver bush or shiny bush is of the family Piperaceae.…”

“…Hence, could be one of the possible mechanisms through which A. Senegalensis significantly halted ethanol gastric lesions. The protective effect of the extract could be attributed to suppression of lipoxygenase activity (Amazu et al, 2015). Furthermore, it has been recorded that ethanol induced ulcers are not only inhibited by anti-secretory agents like ranitidine, but also agents that promote mucosal defensive factors (Essien et al, 2016).…”
