Antiviral Activity of Hederasaponin B from Hedera helix against Enterovirus 71 Subgenotypes C3 and C4a

Abstract: Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is the predominant cause of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD). The antiviral activity of hederasaponin B from Hedera helix against EV71 subgenotypes C3 and C4a was evaluated in vero cells. In the current study, the antiviral activity of hederasaponin B against EV71 C3 and C4a was determined by cytopathic effect (CPE) reduction method and western blot assay. Our results demonstrated that hederasaponin B and 30% ethanol extract of Hedera helix containing hederasaponin B showed significant… Show more

“…Compounds extracted from Chinese herbs have showed promising antiviral effect against EV71 infection (Chiang et al, 2005;Lin et al, 2009;Song et al, 2014;Zhang et al, 2014). The application of these compounds resulted in reduced viral replication, inhibited apoptosis of the infected cells, or decreased mortality of the infected mice.…”

“…Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3), one of the most well-studied enteroviruses, causes viral meningitis, myocarditis and pancreatitis [1,2]. In addition, enterovirus 71 (EV71) is a causative agent of hand-foot-mouth disease and also of severe neurological symptoms, which can lead to even death [3][4][5]. However, despite the increasing public threat, no effective therapy is currently available for the treatment of these infections.…”

“…Assays of antiviral activity and cytotoxicity were evaluated by the sulforhodamine (SRB) method using the cytopathic effect (CPE) induced by viral infection as recently reported (Song et al ., 2014). The infectivity of each virus was determined by measuring intact cells attached to plates after addition of CCID 50 (50% cell culture infective dose) of CVB3 virus.…”
