Antiviral Effect of Ethanolic Extract of Salvadora Persica (Siwak) on Herpes Simplex Virus Infection.

Abstract: Aims:To investigate the effect of ethanolic extract of Salvadora Persica extract on HSV-1 infection both in vitro and in vivo in the mouse model system. Materials and methods: Ethanolic extract of Salvadora Persica was used at different concentrations. BHK cells that grown in Eagles medium were used for virus isolation and titration using PFU/ml. The effects of different concentrations of Salvadora Persica on viral growth in BHK cells as well as cytolytic activity of HSV-1 were evaluated at different time post… Show more

“…The extract with 5-10% had shown no toxicity on in vitro application 38 and study proves that the Herpes simplex HSV-1 viral lesions and ganglia were reduced in the BHK (Baby Hamster Kidney) cells and in the skin of infected laboratory rats when applied with the 5% of ethanolic extract of Salvadora persica 39 . Also the compound Benzyl isothiocyante acts on the prevention of HSV-1 replication and cell free virus in which the roots of the S.persica is found to be Irrigant 40 .…”

“…The plant extract acts on the virus by inactivating the virus particles; this is done by interfering with the adsorption step of the virus to a cell [96]. The Meswak plant stick obtained from Saudi Arabia has exhibited anti-viral property against Herpes simplex virus [97]. The ethanol extract of the plant was tested on baby hamster kidney cells which were infected with Herpes simpex virus.…”

“…Thus, it can be deduced that the ethanol extract of Meswak is able to inhibit the replication of the virus. The compounds which are responsible for the anti-viral activity would be benzyl nitrate and benzylisothiocyanate [97]. Hence, the Meswak plant is also known to be effective anti-viral agent, apart from antibacterial agent.…”

“…Therefore, S. persica was started to be tested as a natural weapon against COVID-19 through docking studies. Molecular docking simulation of identified flavonoid compounds resulted in interfering of SARS-CoV2 Mpro 'which is an important key for virus transcription and replication' more than the currently used COVID-19 main protease inhibitor Darunavir [109].…”
