As the COVID-19 epidemic expands in the world, and with the previous SARS epidemic, avian flu, Ebola and AIDS serving as a warning, biomedical and biotechnological research has the task to find solutions to counteract viral entry and pathogenesis. A novel approach can come from marine chemodiversity, recognized as a relevant source for developing a future natural "antiviral pharmacy". Activities of antioxidants against viruses can be exploited to cope with human viral infection, from single individual infections to protection of populations. There is a potentially rich and fruitful reservoir of such compounds thanks to the plethora of bioactive molecules and families present in marine microorganisms. The aim of this communication is to present the state-of-play of what is known on the antiviral activities recognized in (micro)algae, highlighting the different molecules from various algae and their mechanisms of actions, when known. Given the ability of various algal molecules-mainly sulfated polysaccharides-to inhibit viral infection at Stage I (adsorption and invasion of cells), we envisage a need to further investigate the antiviral ability of algae, and their mechanisms of action. Given the advantages of microalgal production compared to other organisms, the opportunity might become reality in a short period of time.

Graptopetalum paraguayense E. Walther (GP) belongs to the Crassulaceae family and has several health benefits. In the present study we evaluated the cytotoxic, anti-Herpes Simplex virus (HSV) and antibacterial activities of a total methanol/water GP extract. The results from the cytotoxicity investigation of the tested extract showed a high cell tolerable concentration range. The GP extract demonstrated a significant inhibitory effect on the wild-type HSV-1 strain Victoria in a concentration of 0.0001 mg/mL equal to the maximal nontoxic concentration (with 97.5% protection of the cells). Regarding the acyclovir-resistant mutant HSV-2 strain PU and wild-type HSV-2 strain Bja, the antiviral activity and selectivity of the extract were very low, with EC 50 values from 0.1 to 0.01 mg/mL, and the selectivity index ranging from 25 to 250, respectively. The GP extract exhibited selective inhibitory activity also on the growth of Gram-positive bacterial pathogens, with Staphylococcus aureus being most sensitive. It also prevented the formation of MRSA biofilm up to 50% at a concentration of 1.6 mg/mL and up to 90% at a concentration of 2.5 mg/mL. The anti-herpetic and antibacterial activities demonstrated in our investigation are probably related to the presence of phenols, and in particular gallic acid. The antimicrobial activity of the GP extract holds a promise for the future development of nutrition supplements based on G. paraguayense and therefore warrants further studies aimed at isolating biologically active compounds or mixtures thereof with subsequent in-depth investigation of their anti-HSV and antibacterial mechanisms of action.

Japanese quince (Chaenomeles japonica (Thunb.)) is a very important ornamental plant that is rich in many biochemical compounds such as antioxidants and secondary metabolites that have positive effects on human health. The aim of the study was to evaluate the biochemical compounds in the leaves of three Japanese quince (Chaenomeles japonica (Thunb.)) Lindl. ex Spach cultivars (ʻRasaʼ, ʻDariusʼ and ʻRondoʼ). The results showed that the leaves of Japanese quince have strong antiradical activity (1091 ± 22-1135 ± 15 µmol TE/g) in the CUPRAC reaction system. The analysis by the HPLC method revealed that the major polyphenol group in Japanese quince cultivars leaves was phenolic acids and the most common polyphenol compound is chlorogenic acid (11.2-52.4 mg/g DW). The most common triterpene is ursolic acid (3.7-6.8 mg/g DW). Japanese quince leaf powder can be used as a food or beverage additive and enriches our diet with compounds with strong antioxidant activity. ARTICLE HISTORY
