Antiviral Essential Oils Incorporated in Nanocarriers: Strategy for Prevention from COVID-19 and Future Infectious Pandemics

Abstract: Background: Coronavirus has become a life- threatening disease and it is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). This new strain of coronavirus is not completely understood and to date, there is no treatment of coronavirus. Traditional ayurvedic medicines mainly essential oils and Chinese herbs have always played a vital role in the prevention and treatment of several epidemics and pandemics. In the meantime, guidelines of the ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, yoga, unani, siddha and homoepathy) include… Show more

“…[32][33][34] In this context, nanoflora-nanoparticles improving bioactive compounds′ bioavailability-was reported to enhance the delivery of insoluble phytochemicals repurposing antimicrobial drugs, [35][36][37] including therapeutics approaches against viruses [38][39][40] and and coronaviruses (CoVs). [41,42] However, only after the COVID-19 emergence, a considerable number of papers has been published on nanomaterialsbased platforms and coronaviruses, although the first studies initiate after the first coronavirus pandemic, the 2002-2004 severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-Figure 1 shows the number of publications retrieved in a simple search in some databases related to the topics "nano" and "coronavirus" between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2020.…”

“…In addition, two controlled clinical trials have been registered to assess the efficacy of plant-derived essential oils against asymptomatic and symptomatic COVID-19 patients ( Trial ID: CTRI/2021/07/034962 ) in India, and post-COVID-19 fatigue ( ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT04980573 ) in the United States. Above all else, active constituents in essential oils such as phenols, terpenoids, alkaloids, and phenylpropanoids possess potent antiviral properties and are safe for human use with fewer side effects [ 62 ].…”

“…The essential oils also possess bioactive compounds, such as terpenoids, phenylpropanoids and alkaloids, responsible for biological activities. The ability of these oil nanocarrier systems has proved the potential antiviral activity [ 162 ]. Therefore, nanoparticles have been developed as carriers to transfer the specific biomolecules to their specific target sites [ 163 ].…”
