As Trabant (chapter 8 of 2012;1986) explains in his exposition of Humboldt's philosophy of language, Humboldt distanced himself from the traditional Aristotelian semiotic-communicative conception of language as a system of arbitrary signs and instead saw language as the locus of the Kantian faculty of imagination (Einbildungskraft), which creates a synthesis of sensuality (Sinnlichkeit) and understanding (Verstand). According to Humboldt, a word in language is a combination of a physically perceptible sound and a concept, and it is only through the synthetic process that produces this combination that each, the sound and the concept, takes on a definite shape.…”
