“…The fact that young suckers produce a new leaf approximately every 5 d ) would suggest that Provado would only provide short-term protection from aphids found on plants that are not mature. As an alternative to targeting every banana mat during a spraying session, Hooks et al (2009a) proposed that farmers seek out and treat only BBTV infected mats and neighboring plants. The tentative hypothesis is that if Þelds are regularly scouted for BBTV-infected plants and upon detection, infected and neighboring mats are timely sprayed with an insecticide and treated with a bananacide (i.e., herbicide register for destroying infected banana plants), this strategy would reduce spray amounts and associated production cost signiÞcantly, allow users to be in compliance with spray amount restrictions, and would reduce BBTV spread compared with treating the entire Þeld or restricting sprays to small and medium sized suckers.…”

“…Recently, there have been several studies and outreach efforts conducted in Hawaii aimed at learning more about the biology and ecology of P. nigronervosa and the epidemiology of BBTV (Young and Wright 2005;Anhalt and Almeida 2008;Hooks et al 2008Hooks et al , 2009a and developing and disseminating an integrated disease management program for BBTV (Perez and Hooks 2008). Current tactics recommended for mitigating BBTV spread in Hawaii include 1) timely identiÞcation and destruction of virus-infected plants, 2) insecticidal treatment of virus-infected plants before roguing, 3) replanting only with known virus-free tissue cultured plants, and 4) controlling P. nigronervosa populations.…”

“…The Banana Bunchy Top Virus (BBTV; Genus Babuvirus; Family Nanoviridae) is one of the major destructive viruses causing limited production in banana [26]. It is a positive sense (+) circular single-stranded (ss) multipartite DNA virus with six genome components of 1.1 kb each [27,28].…”

“…The speculative effects of herbicide application on the invasion of viruses can be divided into the following: plants were not affected by herbicide; plants were affected by the herbicide, the virus concentration was suppressed, enhanced or not affected (Kazinczi et al, 2003). Previous investigations has generally showed that the activity of viruses are inhibited by the application of herbicides (Kazinczi et al, 2006; Hooks et al, 2009). Krcatovic et al (2008) point out that the treatment of some metabolites such as flavonoids, quercetin, and vitexin on plants also can only suppress the activity of TMV during early infection accompanied with the induce of SA, but the phenomenon cannot last for a long time.…”
