APLNR is involved in ATRA‐induced growth inhibition of nasopharyngeal carcinoma and may suppress EMT through PI3K‐Akt‐mTOR signaling

Abstract: The apelin receptor (APLNR) is a GPCR involved in many pathophysiological processes; however, the correlation between APLNR expression and nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) has not been reported. In this study, we used cDNA microarray data to determine APLNR expression levels in NPC tissues. We found that APLNR expression was reduced in NPC tissues compared with noncancerous nasopharyngeal epithelial tissues. Subsequently, a large‐scale sample of 1015 tissues was used to validate this discovery and explore the re… Show more

“…Extracellular HMGB1 mediates various responses by interacting with its cell surface receptors and triggering diverse biological effects, such as cell proliferation, migration, differentiation and apoptosis [30,31]. Akt/mTOR and ERK signalling pathways play an important role in cell proliferation, survival, growth and apoptosis [32][33][34]. We examined the effects of HMGB1 on Akt/mTOR and ERK/CREB signalling pathway activation.…”

“…After 2 days, the 300‐μL medium was replaced and cell morphology images were recorded for six consecutive days. The invasive degree of globules was of two types: noninvasive spheroids with smooth edges and no obvious cellular protrusions, or occasionally small scattered processes, and invasive spheroids containing fully scattered protrusions (Liu et al ., 2019).…”

“…TGF-β signaling pathway is an EMT inducer in cancer cells and in this way, can provide chemoresistance [123,124]. PI3K/Akt signaling can also induce EMT in cancer cells, and its downregulation is associated with a decrease in EMT [125,126]. Noteworthy, curcumin has demonstrated capacity of affecting both aforementioned signaling networks in impairing EMT.…”
