Apolipoprotein E gene polymorphism and Alzheimer's disease in Chinese population: a meta-analysis

Abstract: The relationship between Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) genotype and the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is relatively well established in Caucasians, but less established in other ethnicities. To examine the association between ApoE polymorphism and the onset of AD in Chinese population, we searched the commonly used electronic databases between January 2000 and November 2013 for relevant studies. Total 20 studies, including 1576 cases and 1741 controls, were retrieved. The results showed statistically significant … Show more

“…ApoE polymorphisms have been reported to be associated with various diseases, including type II diabetes, coronary artery disease [86,87] , hypertension [15] , Alzheimer's disease [88,89] , and dementia in Parkinson disease [90] . Recently, the associations between ApoE gene polymorphisms and the risk of different subtypes of stroke have been studied extensively [91][92][93] , but the results remain inconclusive, particularly in different ethnic groups and geographical locations.…”

“…Additionally, the frequency of the APOE ε3 is lower among AD cases than that in healthy controls, and the difference in ε3 allele frequency was also statistically significant (OR = 0.4, 95% CI 0.4-0.5, p < 0.00001) [13]. …”

“…Asimismo, los genotipos ε3/ε4 y ε4/ε4 se han relacionado con la aparición de la enfermedad de Alzheimer (34,35). En otros estudios no se ha encontrado una asociación entre los genotipos de este gen y las funciones cognitivas, lo cual podría abrir un nuevo campo de investigación (36).…”
