Monoterpenes are a group of natural products that have been widely studied due to their therapeutic potential against various pathologies. These compounds are abundant in the chemical composition of essential oils. Cancer is a term that covers more than 100 different types of malignant diseases and is among the leading causes of death in the world. Therefore, the search for new pharmacotherapeutic options applicable to cancer is urgent. In this review, studies on the antitumor activity of monoterpenes found in essential oils were selected, and botanical, chemical, and pharmacological aspects were discussed. The most investigated monoterpenes were carvacrol and linalool with highly significant in vitro and in vivo tumor inhibition in several types of cancers. The action mechanisms of these natural products are also presented and are wildly varied being apoptosis the most prevalent followed by cell cycle impairment, ROS production, autophagy, necroptosis, and others. The studies reported here confirm the antitumor properties of monoterpenes and their anticancer potential against various types of tumors, as demonstrated in in vitro and in vivo studies using various types of cancer cells and tumors in animal models. The data described serve as a reference for the advancement in the mechanistic studies of these compounds and in the preparation of synthetic derivatives or analogues with a better antitumor profile.

Oral diseases pose a major threat to public health across the globe. Diseases such as dental caries, periodontitis, gingivitis, halitosis, and oral cancer affect people of all age groups. Moreover, unhealthy diet practices and the presence of comorbidities aggravate the problem even further. Traditional practices such as the use of miswak for oral hygiene and cloves for toothache have been used for a long time. The present review exhaustively explains the potential of natural products obtained from different sources for the prevention and treatment of dental diseases. Additionally, natural medicine has shown activity in preventing bacterial biofilm resistance and can be one of the major forerunners in the treatment of oral infections. However, in spite of the enormous potential, it is a less explored area due to many setbacks, such as unfavorable physicochemical and pharmacokinetic properties. Nanotechnology has led to many advances in the dental industry, with various applications ranging from maintenance to restoration. However, can nanotechnology help in enhancing the safety and efficacy of natural products? The present review discusses these issues in detail.

The chemical composition and seasonal variation of essential oils (EO) extracted from the aerial parts of the traditional medicinal plant Piper rivinoides were analyzed using gas chromatography (GC) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS) and GC coupled with flame ionization detector (GC-FID) technique, respectively. The wild plants were collected from two different sites in the Atlantic Forest. The analysis allowed us to identify 96.60 to 99.80% of the EO composition. The major compounds with the highest relative percentage for both specimens, regardless of the season, were the bioactive monoterpenes α-pinene and β-pinene, which ranged from 34.78 (summer) to 53.87% (winter) and from 15.24% (autumn) to 47.71% (winter), respectively. The seasonal stability of the major compounds in the two study specimens throughout the year indicates that the phenological cycle influences biosynthesis more than abiotic factors. This type of chemical phenotypic stability is rarely observed in species belonging to the Piperaceae family, which is characterized by high chemical variability. Furthermore, this stability is favorable, and P. rivinoides has the potential to be a source of bioactive compounds.
