Universities in the U.S. typically offer to teach introductory engineering courses in large classes to tackle the increase in undergraduate engineering enrolment and to save on cost of teaching. Previous studies done on traditionally taught large classes have shown the negative effects it has on students and faculty. Many institutions use online courses to teach these large classes due to the flexibility they provide students with in their schedule and pace of learning, as well as being less expensive for the university. This study aimed to investigate the effect of online pedagogy on the academic performance of students enrolled in mechanics of materials course taught at a U.S. Midwestern University. The findings of the study reveal that the online pedagogy had a negative effect on student academic performance when compared with the traditionally taught group. This was true for all demographics (gender, enrolment status, nationality) and categories (high, medium and low academic performance) of students except for high performing students for whom online pedagogy shows promise.

The use of conceptual models to foster requirements engineering has been proposed and evaluated as beneficial for several decades. For instance, goal-oriented requirements engineering or the specification of scenarios are commonly done using conceptual models. Bringing such model-based requirements engineering approaches into industrial practice typically requires industrial training. In this paper, we report lessons learned from a training program for teaching industry professionals modelbased requirements engineering. Particularly, we as educators and learners report experiences from designing the training program, conducting the actual training, and applying the instructed material in our day-to-day work. From these findings we provide guidelines for educators designing requirements engineering courses for industry professionals. Los ingenieros civiles diseñan construyen y mantienen la infraestructura de la sociedad moderna. Su formación académica y desempeño competente y ético debe ser considerado como prioritario para cualquier país. Desde una metodología mixta apoyada en aspectos cualitativos y datos cuantitativos, en el presente artículo de reflexión, se describen algunas barreras y retos presentes en la formación académica y ejercicio profesional de los ingenieros civiles en Colombia. A pesar de que en las últimas décadas, se ha avanzado en los procesos de Acreditación de Alta Calidad de las universidades y programas académicos en Colombia, se ha identificado que todavía hay mucho camino por recorrer. Aproximadamente, una de cada tres universidades y programas académicos de ingeniería civil ha recibido Acreditación de Alta Calidad por parte del Consejo Nacional de Acreditación de Colombia. Además, a pesar de que los profesores de ingeniería civil deben estar a la vanguardia de formación profesional, se registran algunas atipicidades que demandan atención especial por parte del gobierno colombiano y las universidades. Finalmente, se presentan una serie de recomendaciones enfocadas a mejorar la calidad de la educación en ingeniería civil en Colombia.
