A large-scale immersion experiment was carried out to assess the collapsibility characteristics of loess in Bu Li village located in the Weibei Loess Tableland, and the seepage characteristics and collapsibility evolution of loess were determined. The effects of void ratio, natural moisture content, material composition, and microstructure evolution on the loess collapsibility were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and water-soluble salt analysis to elucidate the collapsibility mechanisms. The water diffusion morphologies considering various foundation lithologies, initial water contents, and stratum combinations were studied with the numerical simulation method, and an inverted-box-shape barrier measure preventing loess from the water immersion was proposed. The results showed that the maximum consolidation settlement was approximately 380.5 mm for the test site, and the expansion of clay minerals and the dissolution of soluble salts during wetting were the critical reasons for loess collapse. The void ratio and natural moisture content showed a positive and negative correlation with the collapsibility coefficient, respectively, and the concept of collapsibility potential was introduced. The water diffusion morphologies in distinct stratum combinations significantly depended on the permeability capacity of the lower soil layer, and the optimal depths of the vertical barrier were recommended to be set at the maximum inflection point in the diffusion morphology or the main action layer.

Mine fires have always been one of the disasters that restrict coal mining in China and endanger the life safety of underground workers. The research and development of new fire prevention materials are undoubtedly important to ensure the safe and efficient production of modern mines. At present, the main inhibiting materials used are grout material, inert gas, retarding agent, foam, gel, and so on. In order to explore the current situation of coal spontaneous combustion (CSC) fire prevention, the existing fire prevention materials were reviewed and prospected from three aspects: physical, chemical, and physicochemical inhibition. The results show that, at present, most of the methods of physicochemical inhibition are used to inhibit CSC. Antioxidants have become popular chemical inhibitors in recent years. In terms of physical inhibition, emerging biomass-based green materials, including foams, gels, and gel foams, are used to inhibit CSC. In addition, CSC fire-fighting materials also have shortcomings, including incomplete research on the mechanism of material action, poor stability of inhibitory properties, low efficiency, and economic and environmental protection to be improved. The future research direction of fire-fighting materials will be based on theoretical experiments and numerical simulation to study the mechanism and characteristics of CSC and develop new directional suppression materials with physicochemical synergies. These findings have extremely important implications for improving materials designed to prevent CSC.

Directional long drilling on the roof is an effective gas control measure in the goaf, but there is little research on the stability of the surrounding rock. In this study, the geological conditions of the #4 coal seam in the Tingnan Coal Mine, Shaanxi Province, China taken as the application background, and the deformation characteristics of boreholes under four typical coal and rock conditions were first analyzed based on the Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC) numerical simulation. Secondly, the stress, strain, and plastic deformation of the rock surrounding the borehole with different diameters were carried out using the Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua 3D (FLAC 3D). The effect of the casing on the stability of the borehole was also simulated. The results showed that the borehole stability of coal and mudstone was lower than that of fine-grained sandstone and coarse-grained sandstone. The larger the borehole diameter, the lower the stability. The borehole tended to be unstable, especially when the diameter was 160 mm and 200 mm. Traditional pipes can provide some protection, but for large boreholes, the protection is poor. Based on the above research, uniaxial compression tests were carried out on various internal support tubes, such as ‘line-shaped’, ‘Y-shaped’, and ‘cross-shaped’. The results showed that the cross-shaped pipe had the highest compressive strength, which was 4–5 times that of the other types of protective pipe and had a good protective effect. The research results can provide reliable technical support for the protection of directional boreholes on roofs through strata and have important implications for the popularization and application of the directional long borehole technique.
