Osmium tris-diphenylphenanthroline perchlorate (Os(DPP) 3 ) can be spread at the air/water interface where it forms solid monolayer films. Brewster angle microscopy revealed that these films consist of irregular ca. 100 to 1000 µm diameter 2D aggregates which coalesce upon compression to form continuous films. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction data showed that the structure of the aggregates is independent of the degree of monolayer compression and features a 2D lattice of hexagonally close-packed Os(DPP) 3 centers with Os-Os distances of 12.57 Å. The latter is 4 to 24% shorter than the Ru-Ru distances found in the 3D monoclinic crystal of an isostructural Ru (DPP) 3 . Two dimensional electrochemical measurements carried out with line microelectrodes at the air/water interface were used to study kinetics of the lateral electron transport in these Langmuir monolayers. Electron transport involves electron hopping on the 2D lattice of the osmium sites where the individual electron transfer steps between Os II (DPP) 3 and Os III (DPP) 3 take place with the rate constant k 1 ) 4.7 × 10 8 s -1 . Percolation theory was used to account for the observed increase of the electron hopping rates during monolayer compression on the water surface resulting in an increase of the extent of connectivity and thus electroactivity of the initially formed 2D Os(DPP) 3 aggregates. Percolation theory also accounts well for the dependence of the electron hopping rates on the composition of fully compressed Os-(DPP) 3 /Ru(DPP) 3 monolayers in which the ruthenium species were used to homogeneously dilute the Os-(DPP) 3 sites. In contrast, in Os(DPP) 3 /octadecanol monolayers, macroscopic self-segregation of the two components was inferred from a larger positive shift of the apparent percolation threshold in the lateral electron hopping.

Monolayers of 4-tetradecaneamido-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy (C 14 TEMPO) were investigated at the air/water interface. Pressure-area diagrams and Brewster angle microscopy provided evidence of supercritical state of this monolayer at temperatures as low as 2°C. The supercritical character of C 14 TEMPO Langmuir monolayers allowed the 2-D voltammetric measurements of its lateral diffusion constant, D, to be extended into a previously inaccessible region of low surface densities with mean molecular areas A ∼ 600 Å 2 /molecule. At A > 250 Å 2 /molecule, D becomes independent of the C 14 TEMPO surface concentration and depends solely on the hydrodynamic coupling of the polar headgroup to the aqueous subphase. These measurements and the supercritical state of C 14 TEMPO monolayer open a possibility to probe the viscoelastic properties of the water liquid-vapor interfacial region.

Our recent work with cyclic and acyclic polyether self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold is presented. A series of dithia-crowntetrathiafulvalene derivatives with one or two disulfide groups has been prepared, and their SAMs on gold have been characterized by electrochemistry and by reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy. These SAMs are extremely stable on repeated electrochemical potential scans and can selectively recognize alkali metal ions. Acyclic polyether derivatives can also self-assemble on gold to yield selective metal ion recognition domains. Impedance spectroscopy data for these SAMs fit the Langmuir isotherm and allow the determination of ion association constants. Some of the SAMs prepared with new acyclic polyether derivatives are able to detect potassium cations selectively when templated in their presence. These structures are believed to be a consequence of ion ''imprinting'' during the process of SAM formation.T he easy preparation, stability, and versatility of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) has resulted in considerable activity in this field since the first publication by Nuzzo and Allara (1). Molecular recognition is especially relevant on surfaces because it allows the control of the exchange of signals, structures, and energy through the interfaces (2-4). SAMs allow the introduction of functional groups in the adsorbates, thus offering a powerful way to develop systems that have applications as sensors, devices, and switches (5). Some recent articles have reported surface structures with hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties arranged in nano-strips and honeycomb or homogeneous structures (6), whereas others have detected photo and electrochemical conversion of cis to trans forms within the SAM (7). Other examples have shown the formation of chiral imprinted sites (8). SAM structures have also been prepared for the recognition and sensing of metal ions (9), some of which are electrochemically active (10-18).Relatively recently, and Bryce et al. (23,24) reported, almost simultaneously, the incorporation of crownether groups into SAMs and their use as potential metal ion sensors. The Reinhoudt group used electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) for SAM characterization and to study the ion recognition processes (19)(20)(21)(22). This technique enables the detection of interfacial ion recognition phenomena when both guest ion and host monolayer are electrochemically inactive, by detecting changes of the charge-transfer resistance induced by metal ion binding (see Fig. 1a; refs. 25 and 26). The report by Bryce et al. (23,24) described SAMs of crown-annelated tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) derivatives, which showed, by cyclic voltammetry (CV), a redox potential shift of the electroactive, surface-confined, crown-TTF group on ion complexation (23, 24).
