Application of Adhesive Bonding in Steel and Aluminium Structures

Abstract: The paper presents achievements in gluing technique in steel and aluminium structures. Adhesives currently in use and available on the market are characterized from the point of view of their mechanical properties. Design rules of adhesive connections and basic methods for their calculations are mentioned. The most significant examples of the applications of those joints in steel as well as aluminium structures are shown.

“…The epoxy resin with aromatic amines with a thickness of 4 mm exhibited the highest resistance against shear strain. In contrast, epoxy resins with a thickness of 7 mm exhibited the highest resistance against shear stress [34]. Apart from reinforcing bonds in concrete structures, adhesives are also used in steel structures using a similar mechanism as concrete applications.…”

“…Structural adhesive joints are a specific kind of non-separable connections that can be applied in many fields of engineering. They have numerous applications in metal structures for automotive, aviation, machine and architecture industry [2,11]. One of the simplest types of the adhesive connections is a single-lap joint that consists of two adherends (i.e.…”

“…That is the reason why methods based on wave propagation are very promising solutions referring to advanced monitoring systems. Guided waves are very suitable for evaluation of structural elements of steel and composite bridges, in particular plain girders as well as welded, bolted and adhesive joints [3], [4], [5].…”
