Application of dendroclimatology in evaluation of climatic changes

Abstract: The present study tends to describe the survey of climatic changes in the case of the Bojnourd region of North Khorasan, Iran. Climate change due to a fragile ecosystem in semi-arid and arid regions such as Iran is one of the most challenging climatological and hydrological problems. Dendrochronology, which uses tree rings to their exact year of formation to analyse temporal and spatial patterns of processes in the physical and cultural sciences, can be used to evaluate the effects of climate change. In this s… Show more

“…As recorded by the nearest meteorological stations Shahroud, Semnan, Mashhad, Bojnord and Sabzevar, the region experienced two common noteworthy decadal scale periods of low spring precipitation since 1950. In agreement with the nearby climate stations records, our reconstruction reveals a significant decrease in precipitation in the 1980s [32]. This reduction is followed by a considerable increase starting in the middle of the 1990s.…”

“…Despite the prominent role of tree rings in investigating past climate variability, dendroclimatological analyses have been only sparsely applied so far in Iran. Few explorations of the relationship between tree-ring variables and various climate factors have unlocked tree rings' considerable potential for climate studies, particularly for the mountain regions in the northern, northeastern, and western parts of Iran [27][28][29][30][31][32][33]. Nevertheless, only a handful of investigations have utilized dendrochronological methods, using tree-ring width variations, for reconstructions of precipitation variations [5,34,35] in the Zagros Mountains, and of temperature in the north of Iran [36].…”

“…In addition, the dendroclimatological relationships of spruce and fir were examined in two periods: prior to rapid warming (i.e., before 1980), and following rapid warming (after 1980). SPSS (SPSS version 26.0, Chicago, IL, USA) software was used for statistical analyses [79,80].…”

“…It is important to predict the behaviour of floods and runoff generation in forest lands, due to their complex nature and the great damage they cause (Khaleghi 2017(Khaleghi , 2018. Many factors affect the rainfall-runoff process (RRP) and also the runoff phenomenon.…”
