Application of halophilic bacteria in traditional solar salt pond: a preliminary study

Abstract: Microbial community in salt ponds have an important role in salt quality production. One of important microorganisms is halophilic bacteria and archaea which has been reported to positively correlated with salt quality. This manuscript reported a preliminary study on application of the halophylic bacteria consortia on to traditional salt pond in Pati. An amount of 0.5% (v/v) of the halophilic bacterial consortia was applied in 20 Baume (Be) salt pond sizing 20 m3. After the saltwater reached 25 Be, the halophi… Show more

“…Generally in this country, the most famous salt production process is traditional method, which namely as the evaporation technique [10]. Of course, this traditional evaporation method is too challenging and highly dependent on weather and climatic conditions [11][12][13]. In 2018 the national salt output produced lisby salt farmers and PT Garam was totally 2.35 million tons.…”

“…However, biological systems can potentially improve the quality and production of traditional salt. This system is inexpensive, environmentally friendly, and capable of producing highquality salt continuously (Chasanah et al 2020) Brebes, Tuban, and Sampang Regencies are three areas of traditional salt production centers in Indonesia. These districts are on the Northern Coast route, including Java Island (Tuban, Brebes) and Madura Island (Sampang).…”
