Application of Oral Lactulose in Combination With Polyethylene Glycol Electrolyte Powder for Colonoscopy Bowel Preparation in Patients With Constipation

Abstract: The aim of the study was to investigate the efficacy of combined application of lactulose oral solution and polyethylene glycol electrolyte powder compared with conventional method in preparing for colonoscopy bowel cleanliness in patients with constipation. Ninety patients, who had constipation and needed to have colonoscopy, were divided into study group and control group with 45 cases in each group, respectively. “…found that sodium absorption could be a target for alleviating salt‐sensitive hypertension and treating constipation. Lactulose is widely used to clinically treat constipation . As predicted (data not shown), HSD‐fed mice manifested constipation symptoms (dry feces, reduced fecal volume, little fecal production per unit time), whereas HSLD‐fed mice showed no constipation (moist and regularly shaped feces, high fecal production per unit time).…”

“…It tastes sweet and has no obvious gastrointestinal side effects. The combined application of lactulose oral solution and PEG has been proven effective for colonoscopy bowel preparation in patients with constipation [7]. However, there is a lack of research describing bowel cleansing and colonoscopy outcomes using lactulose oral solution alone.…”

“…In a 2015 Italian randomized, single-blind study, 400 constipated patients were enrolled and randomly assigned to one of two arms: Split 2-L PEG-citrate-simethicone plus 2-day bisacodyl or split 4-L PEG[ 98 ]. In a 2016 Chinese RCT[ 99 ], the addition of lactulose one day before colonoscopy in combination with 4-L split-dose PEG was shown to be significantly superior ( P < 0.05) to the conventional preparation with oral PEG and electrolytes for colonoscopy bowel preparation.…”
