Application of Stem Cells in Oral Disease Therapy: Progresses and Perspectives

et al.

Abstract: Stem cells are undifferentiated and pluripotent cells that can differentiate into specialized cells with a more specific function. Stem cell therapies become preferred methods for the treatment of multiple diseases. Oral and maxillofacial defect is one kind of the diseases that could be most possibly cured by stem cell therapies. Here we discussed oral diseases, oral adult stem cells, iPS cells, and the progresses/challenges/perspectives of application of stem cells for oral disease treatment.

“…Dental stem cells serve as a reservoirs dedicated to replenishing damaged structures. The different dental stem cells have dedicated names based on their location and regenerative purpose ( Figure 5) [36]. However, many regenerative applications are being developed that use dental stem cells for purposes other than dental regeneration, since they have proven to have multi-differentiation potency [37][38][39][40][41].…”

“…Pulp vitality was assessed by studies on a continuous and an event-based scale, which is why two different meta-analyses were performed. Although the studies non-uniformly used autogenous or allogenic cellular sources for their experimental designs, it seems reasonable to assume that this factor would have only a negligible impact on the compared outcomes (Yang et al 2017). Still, three studies employed growth/differentiation factors to augment the regenerative potential of the transplanted stem/ progenitor cells: a cocktail of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF-2), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), nerve growth factor (NGF), bone morphogenetic protein-7 (BMP-7) (El Ashiry et al 2018) and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) (Iohara et al 2013(Iohara et al , 2014.…”
