Application of sunscreen preparations among young Polish people

Abstract: Young people customarily apply less than 10 g of SPF/m(2). It is therefore unrealistic and possibly even misleading of manufacturers to assess SPF ratings as if people applied 15-20 g of SPF/m(2). Perhaps it is for manufacture's to increase the efficacy of their products rather than for consumers to be asked to apply twice as much?

“…However, there is still debate whether it provides adequate protection against MM and nevus induction. Inadequate sunscreen application has been found to be a common failing leading to deficient photoprotection 27,28 . There is increasing evidence that a number of substances when taken orally exert a preventive effect against UV‐induced skin damage without adverse effects.…”

“…There were several behavioral studies on sunscreen use that aimed to identify the difference between theoretical UVPE (ie, labeled SPF) and actual UV protection and to find out ways to improve UV protection . Most of those studies showed that the amount of applied sunscreen in real‐life situations was significantly lower than the amount defined in the ISO24444.…”

“…Under controlled conditions, appropriate application of sunscreens has been shown to prevent skin cancer [13,14]. However, in real lifedespite the improved galenic properties of sunscreensstill lower (1.0-1.5 mg/cm 2 ) than recommended (2.0 mg/cm 2 ) [16] amounts of sunscreen are used, leading to reduced UV protection and to sunburn [17,18]. In this study, not the amount used by volunteers but the sunscreen application habits and the relative total body coverage after applying the cream according to their typical application routine were the main objectives of evaluation.…”
