Application of Surrogate Optimization Routine with Clustering Technique for Optimal Design of an Induction Motor

Abstract: This paper proposes a new surrogate optimization routine for optimal design of a direct on line (DOL) squirrel cage induction motor. The geometry of the motor is optimized to maximize its electromagnetic efficiency while respecting the constraints, such as output power and power factor. The routine uses the methodologies of Latin-hypercube sampling, a clustering technique and a Box–Behnken design for improving the accuracy of the surrogate model while efficiently utilizing the computational resources. The glob… Show more

“…Surrogate-assisted optimizations have also been performed for electric motors and power converters. In [38] a second order polynomial surrogate model was used for an induction machine, and in [39] a Kriging model for a permanent magnet synchronous motor, to improve their electromagnetic efficiencies. Regarding the power converters, in [40] a neural network was used for efficiency improvements, and in [41] surrogate global optimization was performed for configuration enhancements.…”

“…That is very important if the low-frequency operation is one of the rated operating states of the drive, such as in industrial washing machine drives. Optimization increasing the efficiency can be obtained through its efficiency measurement and control, ensuring optimal efficiency or at the design stage [8]. However, this solution requires the use of current and voltage converters and, as a result, a significant expansion of the drive system [9][10][11].…”
