Abstract:Borates have long been recognized as a very important family of nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals, and have been widely used in the laser frequency-converting technology in ultraviolet (UV) and deep-ultraviolet (DUV) regions. In this work, the borate-based UV and DUV NLO crystals discovered in the recent decade are reviewed, and the structure-property relationship in the representative borate-based UV and DUV NLO crystals is analyzed. It is concluded that the optical properties of these crystals can be well explained directly from the types and spatial arrangements of B-O groups. The deduced mechanism understanding has significant implications for the exploration and design of new borate-based crystals with excellent UV and DUV NLO performance.

Abstract.In the present work we show experimentally on the example of -BaB 2 O 4 crystals that a choice of the slowest acoustic wave for acoustooptic interaction made on the basis of acoustic anisotropy of crystals can essentially increase the acoustooptic figure of merit. The latter parameter for -BaB 2 O 4 obtained by us is equal to M 2 =(211±31)10 -15 s 3 /kg. We demonstrate that the acoustooptic diffraction efficiency in -BaB 2 O 4 increases for shorter wavelengths of optical radiation and reaches almost ~ 75% at the wavelength 325 nm (at the acoustic signal power 0.04 W). This fact, along with transparency of those crystals in the ultraviolet spectral range and their high resistance against a powerful laser radiation, make them attractive materials for operating high-power ultraviolet laser radiation.

Electrooptic Kerr and magnetooptic Faraday effects are studied in LiKB 4 O 7 , Li 2 B 6 O 10 and LiCsB 6 O 10 glasses. The corresponding quantitative coefficients are determined for the wavelength of 632.8 nm. It is shown that the above compounds can be used as electrooptic and magnetooptic materials which are highly resistant to powerful optical radiation and transparent in the ultraviolet spectral range.
