Application of the Oral Minimal Model to Korean Subjects with Normal Glucose Tolerance and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract: BackgroundThe oral minimal model is a simple, useful tool for the assessment of β-cell function and insulin sensitivity across the spectrum of glucose tolerance, including normal glucose tolerance (NGT), prediabetes, and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in humans.MethodsPlasma glucose, insulin, and C-peptide levels were measured during a 180-minute, 75-g oral glucose tolerance test in 24 Korean subjects with NGT (n=10) and T2DM (n=14). The parameters in the computational model were estimated, and the indexes fo… Show more

“…Insulin resistance can be measured directly using the pancreatic suppression test, the hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp technique, or the minimal model approximation of the metabolism of glucose ( 1 2 3 4 ). These tests are invasive, complicated, and cost-intensive procedures; therefore, simpler, indirect methods have been proposed for use in epidemiological and clinical studies.…”

“…25 In addition, some mathematical models were used to evaluate β-cell function from plasma glucose and C-peptide levels during the OGTT. The oral minimal model, 26 which has been reported to be useful in Korean people, 27 was applied using MATLAB software (Mathworks, Inc., Natick, MA, USA). Another model, developed by Mari et al 28,29 includes dose response (slope = glucose sensitivity), early response (rate sensitivity), and potentiation (time-related secretion increase).…”

“…Insulin resistance (IR) is considered as a major cardiometabolic risk factor. IR can be evaluated directly by invasive methods, including the hyperinsulinemiceuglycemic clamp technique [1][2][3][4]. These techniques are not accessible in current medical practice due to their invasiveness and their high cost for the vast majority of patients.…”
