Application of the PEGDE Modified Silk Fibroin Membrane to an Amperometric Glucose Biosensor

Abstract: Stable silk fibroin (SF) membranes were prepared by modifying SF with polyethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (PEGDE) for use as enzyme immobilizing matrix. Morphology, structure, and water solubility of the modified silk fibroin (MSF) membrane were investigated. SEM images revealed greater porosity in the MSF membranes. IR spectra confirmed the predominant β-sheet conformation when the PEGDE was greater than 4%. In addition, the MSF membranes were highly insoluble within the pH range 4 10. An amperometric gluc… Show more

“…The cocoon samples of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, were obtained from the Queen Sirikit Sericulture Centre, Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. The silk fibroin powder was obtained as described in the report of Moonsri et al [5]. Polyethylene glycol (PEG; MW400, Sigma-Aldrich, UK) was used as a pore former.…”

“…Enzyme biosensor is another interesting tool for AA determination because of its high specificity and sensitivity. Ascorbate oxidase (ASOD), a multi-copper centered enzyme, is an enzyme capable of being utilized for AA analysis through immobilization on the solid support [5]. ASOD catalyzes the oxidation of AA by oxygen molecules.…”
