Applications of natural zeolites on agriculture and food production

Abstract: Zeolites are crystalline hydrated aluminosilicates with remarkable physical and chemical properties, which include losing and receiving water in a reverse way, adsorbing molecules that act as molecular sieves, and replacing their constituent cations without structural change. The commercial production of natural zeolites has accelerated during the last 50 years. The Structure Commission of the International Zeolite Association recorded more than 200 zeolites, which currently include more than 40 naturally occu… Show more

“…Nanoproducts called soil‐enhancers have been developed by technology‐oriented companies, to improve water distribution, storage and saving in the agricultural sector. Water‐holding polymers, gels, nanoclays and nanozeolites, have been used to improve the water quality and water‐holding capacity of the soil. Organic polymers, inorganic metals, metal oxide nanomaterials, and carbon nanotubes have also been used to reduce the time and cost of soil remediation treatment , .…”

“…Moreover, zeolites can be used as ingredients in edible coatings on fruits and vegetables to prevent or lessen weight loss, respiration rate, rate of fungal decay, etc. during their storage [12]. Ionexchanged copper and zinc zeolite was found to be excellent foliar fertilizer for wheat which allowed slow mineral release and better mineral fertilization efficiency [13].…”

“…This is because present technologies tend to have high transportation and operation costs, energy demands, and potentially produce toxic chemicals . Ethylene removal using zeolite as an adsorbent has received considerable attention in both industry and agriculture application . Trinh et al .…”

“…3,[10][11][12][13][14] Ethylene removal using zeolite as an adsorbent has received considerable attention in both industry and agriculture application. [15][16][17][18] Trinh et al 16 compared the efficiency of three different zeolites for adsorbing ethylene from an air steam and showed that silver (1.0%)/13X zeolite had high ethylene adsorption affinity. Even though zeolite has a strong ethylene J-H Tzeng et al…”
