Applications of remote sensing and geographic information systems for urban land-cover change studies in Mongolia

Abstract: The aim of this study is to compare the changes that occurred in the main urban landcover classes of Ulaanbaatar city, Mongolia, during a centralized economy with those that occurred during a market economy and to describe the socio-economic reasons for the changes. For this purpose, multi-temporal remote sensing and geographical information system (GIS) data sets, as well as census data, are used. To extract the reliable urban land-cover information from the selected remotely sensed data sets, a refined param… Show more

“…Land use changes in Ulaanbaatar have been analyzed at the metropolitan scale using MODIS, Landsat, and SPOT imagery in some previous studies (Amarsaikhan, Blotevogel, Ganzorig, & Moon, 2009;Tsutsumida et al, 2013). However, residential-scale land use changes, which can depict urban expansion more precisely, have not been investigated in detail to date owing to the lack of time series of feature-oriented data reflecting urban components.…”

“…Some previous studies have used aerial photography for their analysis (Amarsaikhan et al 2009;Tsutsumida 2013). In an analysis of aerial photographs from 2000, 2006and 2008, Tsutsumida (2013 identified and counted the number of Kha-shaa and Ger one-by-one using geographic information systems (GIS), which clarified the extent of outward expansion of Ger areas.…”
