Applications of Serum Protein Electrophoresis in Exotic Pet Medicine

Abstract: Serum Protein Electrophoresis (SPE) is a useful diagnostic and prognostic tool in human and companion animals medicine: several experiences show that it can be useful in exotic practice as well. The fundamentals of SPE interpretation as well as some normal and pathological patterns for the species most commonly seen in practice are provided.

“…Although normal values (reference intervals) for peritoneal fluid in striped skunks are not established, these results were compatible with increased g-globulin levels compared with normal serum values in ferrets, 7 suggesting either exudation or localized antibody (immunoglobulin) production. Results of the other ancillary diagnostic tests are shown in the Supplemental Materials.…”

“…Serum proteins are mainly synthesized in the liver, and, among other functions, maintain blood volume through the colloidal osmotic effect, buffer blood pH, transport hormones and drugs, participate in cell coagulation, catalyze chemical reactions (enzymes), regulate the metabolism (hormones), and participate in the body defense against foreign agents (Melillo, 2013).…”

“…Ross et al (1978) determined albumin values of 10.80-16.10 g/L in broilers, whereas Barbosa et al (2011) found 11.40-12.10 g/L in commercial layers during lay. The main functions of albumin are the transport of several molecules and the maintenance of blood oncotic pressure (Melillo, 2013).…”

“…Distinct alterations in globulin percentages vary among species and inflammatory or disease conditions, presenting some ongoing challenges with the application of this technique in exotic species. 4 This lack of change over time supports absence of a notable acute phase inflammatory response in these animals. However, if the APR in teleost fish is primarily localized, which has been suggested by other researchers, 7 a concurrent decrease in systemic concentrations of globulin proteins may occur as they are redirected or sequestered into the area of local inflammation.…”

“…1,2 Electrophoresis has been extensively investigated in domestic mammals and birds as both a diagnostic tool and a prognostic indicator, but small sample sizes and lack of intensive research have resulted in limited clinical application in other species, including fish. 3,4 Individual acute phase proteins (APPs) have been identified within the large protein fractions and may provide a more specific picture of the inflammatory response and recovery process in various species. Proteins homologous to those characterized in mammals have been identified in fish species and are presumed to perform a similar function.…”
