Applications of zeolites in biotechnology and medicine – a review

Abstract: Zeolites are microporous tectosilicates of natural or synthetic origin, which have been extensively used in various technological applications, e.g. as catalysts and as molecular sieves, for separating and sorting various molecules, for water and air purification, including removal of radioactive contaminants, for harvesting waste heat and solar heat energy, for adsorption refrigeration, as detergents, etc. These applications of zeolites were typically related with their porous character, their high adsorption… Show more

“…The silica incorporated in the aluminosilicate structure is tetravalent whereas the aluminum is trivalent therefore silica tetrahedra is electro-neutral while aluminum tetrahedral is negatively charged. The charge of the entire network is equivalent due to the presence of metal (sodium) in its structure [27] ( Table 2).…”

“…Therefore, in our study, it is thought that the increase in mechanical strength endowed by the presence of CLN might have led to enhancement of ALP activity and ICa. In addition, CLN as a natural CLN can carry divalent metal ions, especially calcium and readily involve in ion exchange with monovalent ions (Bacakova, Vandrovcova, Kopova, & Jirka, ). Consequently, CLN could provide a local increase in calcium ions that might induce osteogenic differentiation (Akmammedov, Huysal, Isik, & Senel, ).…”
