Applying spatial augmented reality to facilitate in-situ support for automotive spot welding inspection

Abstract: In automotive manufacturing, the quality of spot welding on car bodies needs to be inspected frequently. Operators often only check different subsets of spots on different car bodies with a predetermined sequence. Currently, spot welding inspections rely on a printed drawing of the testing body, with the inspection points marked on this drawing. Operators have to locate the matching spot on the drawing and the body manually to perform the inspection. The manual inspection process suffers from inefficiencies an… Show more

“…Projecting a mock cabinet layout onto a potential room space can enable designers to modify the layout to fit the room environment or a potential client's preferences in real-time, and also ensure that drawers or doors do not interfere with normal operation of other objects. In the case of manufacturing, SAR has been applied in a spot welding inspection support system [35]. Projections of a target position for inspection and a path to the next position help a worker avoid misses and prevent duplication of work for welding position inspections.…”

“…[16] presents an AR system to help field workers of utility companies in outdoor tasks such as design, maintenance, or repair. [25] describes an AR system applied to automotive spot welding inspection. The location of spot welds and operation description sheet information are augmented, making it easier for technicians to locate the spot welds.…”
