Applying the Theory of Planned Behavior to Explain Women’s Role in Prostate Cancer Screening

Abstract: The TPB could represent a good framework to explain the role of Italian women in prevention behaviors related to the prostatic screening domain. Consistent with literature findings in social and nursing sciences, the intention to promote prostate cancer screening was a powerful "predictor" of the behavior itself.

“…Researchers typically reported low-to-moderate magnitude among the 3 concepts. 11,40,47,48 The predictive validity of attitude, subjective norm, and PBC for intention was largely supported by empirical evidence. In the reviewed studies, PBC was usually considered as a direct determinant of intention, assigning it a status equal to that of attitude and subjective norm.…”

“…Intentions and PBC further influence individuals' behaviors. The TPB has been widely employed with favorable predictability in studies on regular exercise with different targets, such as elementary school students (Lee et al, 2020;Wang & Wang, 2015), obese students (Didarloo et al, 2017), older adults (Ahmad et al, 2014), and patients with chronic diseases (Hatefnia et al, 2019;Sarra et al, 2015).…”

“…The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) has been employed in many cancer management-related studies (Courneya et al, 2004;Di Sarra et al, 2015;Jones et al, 2005;Wade, Smith, Hankins, & Llewellyn, 2010). It is a social-cognitive model which postulates that performance of a particular behavior is determined by intention which is in turn, influenced by three constructs: attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control (PBC; Ajzen, 1991Ajzen, , 2012.…”
