The study illuminates the complexities inherent in translating expressive language by analyzing the Indonesian novel Pulang by Leila S. Chudori and its English translation Home novel. Utilizing Appraisal discourse analysis, a robust linguistic framework for evaluating language, the study identify the translator's rendering of 155 expressive utterances from the source text into 158 corresponding passages in the English translation. The findings reveal salient patterns of alteration between the source and target texts. Specifically, shifts emerged in the translator's lexical choices pertaining to attitude, engagement, and graduation. While preserving the core ideas, the translated version exhibits distinct preferences for certain attitude markers, more frequent intensification, and a tendency to explicate engagement meanings more than the original Indonesian. Such modifications seem subtle yet prove consequential. The research indicates that altering the lexical or phrasal selections surrounding expressive speech can inadvertently distort the intended message and tenor, potentially diminishing the reader's investment and engagement with the literary work. Moving forward, translators seeking to produce more authentic translations of expressive texts must remain acutely cognizant of the cultural nuances ingrained in the source language and exercise care in choosing lexical items that accurately convey the original meanings and affect. Meticulous word choice preserves the vital expressive essence between languages. Overall, Appraisal discourse analysis demonstrates a robust framework for evaluating and enhancing literary translation quality.

This study is conducted to find out the attitudinal resources used by a student-teacher talk on online classroom interaction through appraisal framework (Martin & White, 2005). This research used a qualitative approach with adopted critical discourse analysis (CDA) research design. The subjects of this research were students in the fifth semester and teachers in Universitas Majalengka. The findings show that the dominant type of attitudinal system of student and teacher talk on online classroom interaction; The dominant attitude device found by students is Judgment which constitutes 23,33%, followed by Appreciation (16,67%), and Affect (13,33%). The dominant attitude device found by the teacher is Affect which constitutes 31,14%, followed by Appreciation (21,31%), and Judgement (11,47%). Students can use this kind of analysis a develop speaking skills based on character education that can provide basic rules for life and practice behaviors that reflect values. The way teachers and students express their emotional reactions shows their aspects and their relationships through the choice of language. The contribution of student and teacher talk in terms of appraisal analysis are; a sense of curiosity, sense of communicative, sense of responsibility, sense of respect for achievement, sense of honesty, and sense of independent.

This study aimed at evaluating the students’ attitude toward online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic within the written discourse by using the Appraisal Theory arranged by Martin & White, under the region of appreciation. Appreciation dealt with the evaluation of semiotic and natural phenomena. The realization of appraising item was adjectival that might have either positive or negative meaning. The data were obtained from the essays written by 25 students who joined the conversation subject through the online classroom. This study engaged with the qualitative descriptive method. The objectives of this study were three extents: (a) to find out the most predominant appreciation items the students tried to convey, (b) to find out the students’ value position, and (c) to give the pedagogical suggestion on the online learning. The result of the analysis showed that within 137 appraising items found, the positive appraising item exceeded the account of 52,5%. It reflected that the students had positive attitude toward online learning activities. Moreover, the students presented their value position as agreeing with the activity of online learning. Therefore, constructive pedagogical suggestions were given to the lecturers, the students, and the institution stakeholders.
