Appraisal of the acceptability of subtropical rutaceous plants for a swallowtail butterfly, Papilio protenor demetrius (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae)

Abstract: INTRODUCTIONMost butterfly species are phytophagous and usually utilize only a limited range of host plants in nature. Although the host range of an insect is determined by a diversity of ecological, geographical, physiological, and behavioral factors, the key elements underlying the host range determination are phytochemicals; stimuli evoked, in particular, by plant secondary metabolites which are thought to have a significant effect on host utilization by herbivores (e.g. Städler, 1992). It has been fully es… Show more

“…Plant toxins, either intact or suitably modified inside the insect, can even become essential components of the insect's mating, defence and host location systems (Nishida, 2002;Sime, 2002;Murakami et al, 2003;Chachin et al, 2007).…”

“…It was noteworthy that P. maackii females responded positively to Fr. 2, as this isobutanol-soluble fraction has been reported to be almost inactive by itself for the Rutaceae-specialized Papilio species thus far investigated (Honda and Hayashi, 1995a;Nakayama et al, 2002;Murakami et al, 2003;Chachin et al, 2007). In marked contrast, P. protenor females responded positively only to Fr.…”
