Abstract:The agricultural land resources of China are relatively limited because of its large population. Therefore, balancing the land use for industrialization, urbanization, and food security is a big challenge. In recent years, rural hollowing in China has resulted in numerous of abandoned rural houses, and the areas with abandoned houses need to be restored into agricultural land with effective land consolidation techniques. This study used the method of benefit-cost analysis and the data collected through field surveys conducted in Yucheng City in the northwest of Shandong Province in March 2009, to examine how hollow villages (HVs) to be created and how to solve the problem. The qualitative and quantitative analyses indicate following results. 1) The situation of HVs is becoming increasingly severe under rapid industrialization and urbanization in Yucheng City. 2) Poor infrastructure in rural areas and incomplete urbanization are the main factors that have led to the rural hollowing in many major rural regions of China. 3) In order to resolve the problem caused by HVs and increase agricultural land, reconstructing rural communities in the countryside is necessary. 4) A new mechanism in the provision of compensation funds by developed regions to the villages in less-developed regions must be established.

The accurate prediction of urban growth is pivotal for managing urbanization, especially in fast-urbanizing countries. For this purpose, cellular automata-based (CA) simulation tools have been widely developed and applied. Previous studies have extensively discussed various model building and calibration techniques to improve simulation performance. However, it has been a common practice that the simulation is conducted at and only at the spatial extent where the results are needed, while as we know, urban development in one place can also be influenced by the situations in the broader contexts. To tackle this gap, in this paper, the impact of the simulation of spatial extent on simulation performance is tested and discussed. We used five villages at the rural–urban fringe in Chengdu, China as the case study. Urban growth CA models are built and trained at the spatial extent of the village and the whole city. Comparisons between the simulation results and the actual urban growth in the study area from 2005 to 2015 show that the accuracy of the city model was 7.33% higher than the village model and the latter had more errors in simulating the growth of small clusters. Our experiment suggests that, at least in some cases, urban growth modeling at a larger spatial extent can yield better results than merely modeling the area of interest, and the impacts of the spatial extent of simulation should be considered by modelers.

E ste artigo realiza uma análise social de fatores que influenciam o desenvolvimento e o planejamento de núcleos populacionais rurais, aqui tratados como assentamentos rurais. Nesse sentido, busca determinar quais são e em que medida os objetos identificados excercem influência no espaço rural e no seu âmbito de atuação relacionados como lugares rurais. O objetivo foi identificar a percepção social do espaço rural e do lugar de assentamentos rurais dos municípios de Cervantes e Guitiriz, levando em consideração dois grupos sociais: a própria comunidade rural e um grupo de técnicos em planejamento.Tendo em vista análises sobre o planejamento das áreas rurais, este estudo incorpora em seu quadro teórico de referência a percepção do espaço social segundo duas comunidades diferentes. Nesse sentido, considera os estudos sobre identidade, cultura, antropologia e memória galega. Também se fundamenta em análises da estrutura urbana e rural da Galícia que apoiam o suporte teórico do estudo desta região no sentido de aferir as homogeneidades e as heterogeneidades socioculturais, o que permite uma adequada compreensão territorial.
