Appraisal on the wound healing potential of Melaleuca alternifolia and Rosmarinus officinalis L. essential oil-loaded chitosan topical preparations

Abstract: The present study investigates the wound healing potential of three chitosan-based topical preparations loaded with either tea tree essential oil, rosemary essential oil or a mixture of both oils in vivo. Essential oils of M. alternifolia and R. officinalis were analyzed using GC/MS. Essential oil-loaded chitosan topical preparations were formulated. Wound healing potential was evaluated in vivo using an excision wound model in rats. GC/MS analysis of M. alternifolia and R. officinalis essential oils revealed … Show more

“…Essential oil components were elucidated from their mass spectra and retention indices (RIs) relative to a mixture of a homologous series of standard n ‐alkanes (C 8 –C 28 ) injected under the same conditions. These data were compared with NIST‐11, Wiley Registry of Mass Spectral Database and data reported in the literature 6,11–17 …”

“…An increase in the number of blood vessels and fibroblasts, through cyclin-D1 pathway activation and enhanced expression of Bcl-2, was also observed [ 190 ]. A positive effect on wound healing process has also been described for other EOs such as lavender EO, TTO, Alpinia zerumbet and Chrysantemum boreale Makino EO and their use has been suggested for the treatment of wounds, burns, abscesses or diseases such as diabetes [ 191 , 192 , 193 , 194 ]. Thus, the antiangiogenic property or the positive effect on wound healing showed by some EOs should be considered when proposing them for treatment of cancer or other diseases.…”

“…Essential oils contain many chemical compounds (monoterpene hydrocarbons, oxygenated monoterpenes, sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, oxygenated sesquiterpenes, and others) which are not stable [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. Essential oils not only have an odor or flavor [ 4 ] but they also have antibacterial [ 5 , 6 ], antioxidant [ 2 , 7 ], and many pharmaceutical effects: they decrease pain [ 8 , 9 ], reduce inflammation [ 10 ], and promote wound healing [ 11 , 12 ]. For instance, for nutmeg, its essential oil has antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and insecticidal effects [ 1 , 13 ].…”
