Approach to develop a screw configuration for compounding solid fillers on a twin screw extruder using the example of polyethylene-layered silicate masterbatches

Abstract: The high potential of layered silicate improving material properties of plastics has been discussed in a significant number of publications. However, homogeneously dispersing it with twin screw extruders is demanding. Available information on optimum screw configuration is contradictory. In this investigation, we develop a practical method for individually designing and optimising extruder sections. This method is applied for designing extruder sections for compounding masterbatches of high-density polyethylen… Show more

“…Afterwards, the screw root increases its diameter to build up pressure again [19]. Studies even present vacuum venting extruders, which could be so effective at removing the volatiles and the moisture that the drying step can be skipped [20]. In order to enhance a homogenous melt, mixing components are used [21].…”

“…Graphene interacts badly with this kind of matrices due to the low interaction energy between graphene and non-polar matrices [36][37]. Although the use of graphene as a functional filler in polymers show good results in laboratory scale experiments in a laboratory mixer, the dispersion of fillers in nanometer scale during a continuous melt compounding process is key to transfer the potential of these fillers to the industrial practice [38][39]. Due to economic aspects, the residence time of the polymer and the used fillers is limited during the compounding process.…”

“…Even though nanofillers show good results in laboratory scale experiments, there are only few commercial applications of nanofillers. Dividing and dispersing nanofiller‐agglomerates during the melt compounding process is of great importance . During the industrial processing of composites with nanofillers, they tend to agglomerate, leading to a loss of their positive properties.…”
