Approach to FNA of Thyroid Gland Cysts

Abstract: Fine needle aspiration is a well-known procedure for the diagnosis and management of thyroid lesions, representing the first diagnostic tool for the definition of their nature. In clinical practice, a thyroid nodule can be classified as solid, cystic, and partially cystic based on its internal components. Different thyroid imaging reporting systems and cytologic diagnostic systems have focused their attention on solid nodules, which are more frequently linked with a malignant outcome. In fact, numerous papers … Show more

“…3,4 At the initial evaluation of an adult patient who has a cystic neck mass, a comprehensive head and neck examination, FNAC analysis, and imaging should all be performed. 5 The features of thyroid nodules are often assessed by ultrasound (US) imaging, which may distinguish between cystic and solid thyroid nodules. Cysts are seen as anechoic masses with smooth borders and thin walls.…”

“…These cysts are more commonly benign thyroid adenomas, but they have a 5%‐10% malignancy risk, which rises as the amount of the solid nodule increases 3,4 . “…FNA is currently considered the gold standard for preoperative diagnosis of thyroid nodules. When the nodules can not be clearly judged by ultrasound, FNA can be employed to further determine the condition of the nodules and the risk of cancer at the cellular level [ 22 ]. Although FNA contributes to differentiating benign and malignant thyroid nodules, it may cause pain and small hematomas in patients.…”

“…Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) has been instrumental in evaluating thyroid nodules since its widespread adoption in the 1980s. [ 1 , 2 ] This technique revolutionized thyroid nodule management, a condition prevalent in up to 50% of the adult population, with higher incidence rates in women and the elderly. [ 3 , 4 ] Although most nodules are benign, distinguishing them from the approximately 5% that are malignant is critical, as thyroid cancer constitutes a significant portion of thyroid nodule cases.…”
