Appropriate CFD Turbulence Model for Improving Indoor Air Quality of Ventilated Spaces

Abstract: Accurate assessment of air-flow in ventilated spaces is of major importance for achieving healthy and comfortable indoor environment conditions. The CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) technique is nowadays one of the most used approaches in order to improve the indoor air quality in ventilated environments. Nevertheless, CFD has still two main challenges: turbulence modeling and experimental validation. As a result, the objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of different turbulence models poten… Show more

“…Furthermore, the best behavior for internal convective airflows among k- models has been established by using SST k-ω turbulence models . Finally, SST k-ω turbulence models have shown the better overall prediction of the airflow among 6 turbulence models investigated, in comparison with detailed experimental data for similar configurations to that in our study: airflows generated by mixing ventilation system in small rooms at low air changes per hour (Teodosiu et al, 2014). “…In order to characterize the fluid flow, Realizable kepsilon turbulent model was considered as suitable for numerical simulation of wind flow around buildings 22 and air circulation inside a room. 23 In addition, a two-layer approach 24 was used in order to gain added flexibility of an all -y + wall treatment. The transport equations for the kinetic energy k and the turbulent dissipation rate ε are as given in equation ( 9):…”

“…It is possible to solve a turbulent flow scenario without a turbulence model, and this is referred to as direct numerical simulation (DNS). DNS requires an extremely fine grid resolution, which leads to unreasonable calculations and vast computational power [21]. A commonly used method to describe turbulent flows is defined by the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations, which are a time averaged version of the Navier-Stokes equations.…”
