Aqueous calcium sulphate as bone graft for voids following open curettage of bone tumours

Abstract: Aqueous calcium sulphate as a sole grafting agent for void management after curettage simplifies current treatment practices and displays good bone reconstruction in a comparatively short time frame, with excellent functional results and acceptable complication rates in the setting of tumour surgery.

“…The complication rate of nearly 30% [1,3] is different from the rate currently reported with the use of geneX 1 in our series. It is correct that in the current series, one patient used Vitoss TM (Stryker Orthopaedics, Mahwah, NJ, USA) combined with geneX 1 and allograft struts to refill the bony void after the curettage of a relapsed juvenile bone cyst of the humerus (patient 30).…”

“…In reference to this manufacturing process, we investigated the viability of synthesizing calcium phosphate from the large volumes of used gypsum originating from the daily activities of dental laboratories. Gypsum is widely used in models for pretreatment diagnostics, orthodontics and in the fabrication of restorative prostheses and artificial dentures, but is also recognized as a bone filling material 33,34) . The majority of gypsum models are eventually disposed of as industrial waste, so a novel method of recycling them into a useful biomaterial would have significant environmental and economic benefits.…”
