Aqueous Medium Synthesis Route for Randomly Stacked Molybdenum Disulfide

Abstract: Synthesis of poorly crystalline, randomly oriented rag-like structures of molybdenum disulfide has been reported starting from aqueous solutions of ammonium molybdate, and thioacetamide in presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate via calcination of the amorphous precipitates, obtained through acidification of the in situ generated intermediate of ammonium tetrathiomolybdate. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction of the calcined samples reveal the formation of single-phase M… Show more

“…The decrease in Se/Mo ratio cannot explain the peaks shifts to a lower angle; however, carbon can become entrapped in the basal planes [51], causing the c lattice constant to increase. The increase in interplanar distances due to the incorporation of a 3rd element in the lattice has been reported by Rasamani [51] and Panigrahi [52], which is in agreement with our observations. The interplanar distances calculated from XRD diffractograms increased from ~0.69 nm (DC MoSe2) to ~0.75 nm (DC324) and from ~0.67 nm (RF MoSe2) to ~0.73 (RF170) in cases 1 and 2, respectively.…”

“…4d-f layer which can be proved by the greater downward shift of (002) peak as compare with M and MF. This is in agreement with Panigrahi and Pathak [41], where the (002) peak was shifted…”

“…The increase in crystalline nature at higher temperature is justified with a decrease in d-spacing value calculated by Bragg's eq-2, from 0.44 to 0.28 nm Figure 4. The sphere shape of MoS 2 particles could be thin MoS 2 layers curled up by the high temperature annealing [26]. The removal of oxygen atoms from the lamellar MoO 3 is responsible for the decreased crystallinity.…”
