Abstract: SUMMARYThis study defines and discusses the natural patrimony represented by monumental trees, i.e. large old trees of native tree species from Chile. These trees should be preserved because they: 1) foster natural fascination, 2) are rarities of nature, 3) provide ecosystem services, 4) allow the study of individual adaptations, 5) represent a biocultural patrimony and 6) have been strongly exploited. It is proposed to conduct a national survey of monumental trees and develop policy instruments to protect the… Show more

“…We studied three sites near the tree line (between 995 and 1145 m above sea level) in the geographical distribution of the N. pumilio forests in central Patagonian Andes, Aysén region (between 45–47° S and 71–73° W, Figure 1 and Table 1). The forests were dominated by N. pumilio , a deciduous species that can reach 37 m in height, up to 1.86 m in diameter, and 451 years old (Gutiérrez, 2016). The sites are within public protected areas, in the Trapananda National Reserve (TRAP), Cerro Castillo National Park (RCAS), and Patagonia National Park (LARG).…”
