Archaeology in the Service of the Tribe: Three Episodes in Twenty-first-Century Tribal Archaeology in the US–Mexico Borderlands

Abstract: The 1987 publication "Uses of the Past: Archaeology in the Service of the State" offers the inspiration for considering the emerging role of descendent communities in archaeological research and cultural resource management in the American Southwest. Recognizing that interpretations of the past are seldom "value neutral", we explore the implications and benefits of interpretations of the past when they are "value tribal". Three episodes in twenty-first-century Tribal Archaeology in Arizona are considered inclu… Show more

“…The disparity in representation of minority scholars in biological anthropology likely stems from a combination of multiple factors, including a history of racism and unethical practices by scientific leaders in the field. For example, in the early 1900s, shortly after the mass murder of more than one hundred Yaqui people, Aleš Hrdlička, the founder of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists (AAPA, the largest association of biological anthropologists), trav-eled to Sonora, Mexico, to collect the bodies of twelve of these Yaqui individuals to bring back to the American Museum of Natural History for study and display (Darling et al 2015). This example, along with other actions of past AAPA-affiliated practices, has likely resulted in a lasting objectionable reputation for the field among minority community members.…”

“…State-directed heritage laws such as the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and the Karanga Aotearoa Repatriation Programme in New Zealand have been used by Indigenous communities to secure a seat at the proverbial table in matters of archaeological research and cultural heritage management (e.g. Darling et al 2015; see also Smith & Wobst 2004 on the parallel development in Australia). Scholars working within the framework of Indigenous Archaeology are pushing the discipline forward by asking, “How can archaeologists reshape who controls, has access to, and benefits from the products of their research in ways that strengthen Indigenous sovereignty?” (Laluk et al 2022: 660).…”

“…Beyond working with other colleagues, collaborations with local and descendant communities are a central concern of our discipline (Carman ; Darling et al. ; Guilfoyle and Hogg ; Leiuen and Arthure ; McAnany and Brown ; Plog et al. ; Roberts et al.…”
